Booking Your CITB Test

The first step to getting any CSCS Red Card is to book your CITB Test. The exact test depends on the type of Red Card you’re applying for, but all tests focus on assessing your understanding of health, safety, and environmental standards within the construction sector.

Booking the CITB Test is simple and can be done directly on the CITB website. Be sure to schedule your test early, as availability can be limited and slots fill up fast.

Test For CSCS Red Card

The CSCS Red Card test is designed to confirm your solid understanding of health and safety practices on construction sites. All versions of the test evaluate your knowledge of risks, responsibilities, and industry best practices. Performing well in this test is essential, as it plays a major role in determining your eligibility for the CSCS Red Card—so thorough preparation is highly recommended.

Unlike other CSCS cards, which typically have only one or two types (such as Black, Gold, Green, Blue, and White), the Red Card comes in five different variations. This page will guide you through the different types of CSCS Red Cards, how to obtain each one, and explain the details of the CITB Test required for the Red Card.

About the CSCS Red Card

The CSCS Red Card is an important stepping stone for individuals entering the construction industry. With five distinct types available—each tailored to different experience levels and career stages—the Red Card can help pave the way for long-term career growth. Below, you'll find an overview of each Red CSCS Card option to help ensure you choose and test for the one that best matches your path.

CSCS Red Card – Trainee

This card is intended for individuals currently undergoing training related to the construction industry. CSCS will need to confirm that your specific course of study is eligible. The Red Trainee Card is valid for five years and is non-renewable, as it’s expected that you’ll complete your training within that time frame. To apply for this card, you must pass the CITB Operatives Test.

CSCS Red Card – Provisional or Temporary Card

The CSCS Red Provisional Card is typically for individuals going through a probationary period or exploring a career in construction. It is only available to those who have never held any type of CSCS Card before. This card is valid for just 6 months and cannot be renewed. To get the Provisional Card, you must pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Operatives Test and then submit your application for the Red CSCS Provisional Card.

CSCS Red Card – Apprentice

This Red Card is designed for individuals who have started an apprenticeship under a recognised framework. It is valid for 4 years and 6 months and cannot be renewed, as it is expected that you’ll complete your apprenticeship within that period. To obtain this card, you must pass either the CITB Operatives Test or the relevant Specialists Test.

CSCS Red Card - Technical, Supervisor or Manager

Supervisors, Managers, and Technical Workers enrolled in an NVQ/SVQ Level 3 or higher qualification may be eligible for the CSCS Red Card – Technical, Supervisor or Manager. In some cases, you may also need to provide evidence of at least one year of relevant on-site experience. This card is valid for 3 years and cannot be renewed. To apply, you’ll need to pass the appropriate CITB test—either the Specialist, Managers, or Professionals Test, depending on your role.

CSCS Red Card – Experienced Worker

The CSCS Red Experienced Worker Card is intended for individuals with a minimum of one year’s experience working in their trade, along with proof of registration on an NVQ/SVQ Level 2 or higher qualification. This card is valid for 1 year and cannot be renewed, as it is expected you'll complete your qualification during that time. To obtain the card, you must pass either the CITB Operatives Test or the relevant Specialists Test.
